As the Charger edges closer to its exit, we can only appreciate it in its highest and most radical trim yet.

The American sedan category is fast diminishing as more people chase the flexibility and practicality offered by SUVs and hatchbacks. For instance, Ford hasn't produced a sedan since 2019. It is sad to see the segment fade into oblivion, seeing Sedans have gotten much better and more versatile than ever. But Japanese brands like Toyota and Honda persist with new sedan models, and they are thriving. There is one American performance sedan we'd hoped wasn't going anywhere anytime soon, but it is also going out of production in 2023. That is none other than the mighty Dodge Charger.

Dodge has built the Charger since 1966 across seven generations. A full-size muscle car sedan and America's only four-door muscle car. We've seen some cool Chargers over the years, and the modern interpretation of the iconic nameplate is a boxy-shaped coupe version of the Challenger. As the Dodge Charger edges closer to its swan song, we can only appreciate it, especially in its highest trim, the SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody.

Chrysler practically ushered in the American muscle car when they rolled out the 426 Hemi in 1964. Sadly, all good things end, and like the Charger, the Hemi is on its last lap. It began last year when they disbanded the Dodge SRT team, then came the rumors that they would replace it with a boosted-straight-six engine. The SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody is the final and purest form to enjoy the Hemi engine.

It has a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 producing 797 screaming ponies and 707lb-ft of torque.

With the Hellcat Widebody, you undoubtedly get to dominate the road. It oozes personality behind the serious punch under the hood. The wide fenders provide 3.5-inches in extra width over the standard Charger resulting in a more menacing stance and increased stability. It is bound to intimidate other cars on the road.

Also, there is plenty of Hellcat badging around and inside the car to remind you this is a beast from hell and match the raucous exhaust sound song produced by the Hellish engine.

The fire-breathing monster underneath needs lots of air to keep things cool and a little less hellish. The Redeye came with a new hood design in 2021, allowing more air flow to cool the car's 2.7-liter IHI supercharger.

It is a functional air-induction hood featuring dual-heat extractors for the best possible performance. It is curvy, and the various vents make for a muscular look while being functional.

Inside the Charger, everything means business with the materials, badging, and technology on offer screaming exclusivity and performance. It comes with many desirable standard features and customization options. From the leather upholstery to the heated and ventilated seats, the nice-looking instrument cluster and plenty of storage pockets around the cabin make for an accommodating interior space.

Also, you can opt for the Carbon and Suede package, which comes with sporty carbon fiber trims and faux-suede headliners. But they could have done more for the price since the Redeye Widebody shares the same design and space as the standard Charger.

From first impressions and reading from the performance sheet, the Charger Hellcat Redeye Widebody looks set to dominate the quarter mile and nothing more like many old muscle cars. When you get to drive, you find it's nimbler than it looks.

It comes with stiffer chassis components, and the wider 305/35ZR20 tires, which are stickier, help improve body control and grip around corners. While it is highly refined, the lack of steering feel can make the car feel lifeless for an enthusiast.

Dodge claims the SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody is the world's most powerful and fastest production sedan. That is only true if you exclude the 1111-hp Lucid Air that runs purely on electric juice. All the closest competitors are electric, including the Porsche Taycan Turbo s, Mercedes-Benz AMG EQS 53 4MATIC, and Audi RS e-Tron GT. Perhaps you can compare the car with the Cadillac CTS-V Blackwing, which packs almost 150hp less.

The Redeye Widebody has stunning acceleration and can launch to 60mph in a ridiculous 3.5 seconds and claim a 203-mph top speed.

Hard as you may look, you won't find another American sedan with a better blend of comfort, performance, and muscle car styling than the Charger Redeye Widebody. It is much roomier than a typical muscle car, with good head, hip, and shoulder room for two adults in the front and two kids in the rear seats. Also, it has a decent cargo space of 16.5 cu-ft with all seats down.

The tech and safety features work pretty well to make you feel assured while taming the beast from hell. The optional Technology Group package includes a collection of driver safety aids like forward collision mitigation, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

If you thought 797hp was a lot, dodge provides an SRT Jailbreak option to crank up the ponies to 807. It ensures the Redeye Widebody goes out in style as the most powerful iteration of the Hemi V8. But the Dodge Jailbreak goes beyond power upgrades and lets you heavily personalize the ride to your taste.

You get five bold badge options, a variety of go-faster stripes and paint jobs, rims, and brakes. Other exterior mods include a spoiler and exhaust tips. Inside there are countless leather seat options, steering wheel wraps, and console finish.

What more could an adrenaline junkie with a family ask for? Blistering acceleration and reassuring brakes while providing sufficient convenience and utility. A car you throw around the track and go pick up kids from school later. The pedal response can feel a bit soft, but the short stopping distance increases confidence in town driving.

800 ponies aren't for the faint-hearted; there are fewer brute-force muscle cars, and none will come with four doors. The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody offers a tamer and more practical option to the Challenger without sacrificing the excessive power.
