With the newest model year, Ford has expanded the tradition and taken it up a notch in power and performance with the 2022 Mustang Mach-E GT.

As one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the United States, Ford Motor Company has been a leader in innovation since their inception in 1903. From humble beginnings, the company introduced large scale manufacturing and assembly line procedures that revolutionized the automotive production industry.

Continuing their longstanding tradition of innovation, Ford has committed to an impressive electrification process that includes investing $22 billion through 2025, and creating electric vehicles (EV) versions of some of their most well-known and loved vehicles including the F-150, Transit, and their highly regarded muscle car, the Mustang.

As part of that plan, Ford revealed the Mustang Mach-E EV back in 2019 and began sales in the 2021 model year. The GT (Grand Touring or Grand Turismo) trim that has historically been available on Ford models and has generally represented a faster, better iteration of the standard was continued with the Mach-E as well. With the newest model year, Ford has expanded the tradition and taken it up a notch in power and performance with the 2022 Mustang Mach-E GT.

Let’s take a closer look at why we love the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT!

Although there have been some questions as to whether the Mach-E should qualify as a true “Mustang,” there is no doubt that Ford has held true to the base concept of power behind the name. Yes, it is a cross-over, and it is definitely missing the deep growl that Mustang as a muscle car had come to be recognized for, however, the Mach-E represents the future of Ford by showcasing their new direction (EVs) alongside their existing values (speed, power, and reliability).

The GT trim of the Mustang Mach-E is impressive with 480 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft of torque at peak battery power. The GT can reach an acceleration of 0-60 MPH in just 3.8 seconds. Opting into the Performance Edition of the GT bumps these specifications even higher to 634 lb.-ft of torque and shaves down the 0-60 MPH acceleration time to just 3.5 seconds.

With the higher horsepower and torque, the GT trim out-powers the regular Mach-E (with extended battery) by 134 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft of torque overall and out-accelerates it by a full second (down from 4.8 seconds on the 0-60 MPH sprint). The power behind the Mach-E GT comes from twin permanent magnet synchronous motors connected to a 91.0 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Another add-on to the GT trim is “Unbridled Extend Drive Mode,” an option that enables more consistency in power over a longer period of time while controlling other vehicle options such as traction and stability thresholds. This option is possible by allowing the car to reduce peak power slightly and was developed for track use where drivers would want to opt for better performance and handling.

One of the features we love in the GT trim is the updated overall look of the Mustang Mach-E. Just as with other GT trims, Ford has integrated some subtle stylistic differences between the original model and the GT including better wheels; the GT has 20-inch machined-face aluminum wheels with high-gloss painted pockets and All-Season tires and the GT Performance Edition comes with Pirelli summer tires and a birds-nest style wheel design.

Additionally, the Mach-E GT includes black painted sills and a patterned black grille panel with illuminated badging. The interior follows suit on these design upgrades with a dark aesthetic including black door panels, dash, and faux leather/suede seats. To alleviate the darkness, Ford integrated some contrast into the interior with touches of copper (including metallic stitching and piping on the seats) that add to the upscale and sporty feel of the interior.

The upscale feel of the GT does not end with just appearances either. The heated front-row bucket seats on the Performance Edition and the technology embedded into both the standard GT and Performance GT are particularly impressive. The GT trim comes with a 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen center display for infotainment that includes compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Another facet of the technology integrated into the Mach-E GT is the overall safety of the car. The GT comes with Ford’s standard Co-Pilot 360 2.0, which includes both front and rear automatic braking, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alerts. Additionally, the Co-Pilot Assist 2.0 takes safety a step further with lane-centering assist, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control.

Overall, the safety on just a standard Mach-E is impressive, but the GT trim also offers another level “pack” which includes automatic parking and hands-free driver aid which will offer semi-autonomous driving with warnings for particularly tricky situations where the driver needs to take back control. The add-on is priced at $1,900.

The base price of the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is $63,095 while the base Mach-E starts at just $43,995 for select rear-wheel drive models according to Kelley Blue Book. The GT Performance Edition will add to that price at $67,995. Currently, the car is not available to order through Ford as they have sold out for the current year. In order to get your hands on one, according to Ford, you may need to check for limited inventory at select dealers or wait for the 2023 model year.

We aren’t surprised to hear that the 2022 Mach-E GT has already sold out online, though. There is a lot to love about the car from its sporty design and power to its over-the-top technology and safety features, the Mustang Mach-E GT is a powerhouse of an EV.
