4 of the Longest-Range EVs That Are Not Teslas

Tesla has a reputation for making some of the longest-range EVs — unsurprising given the automaker’s experience in the industry. You can see that in the Model X, Model 3 Long Range AWD, and Model S Long Range. They can go 351, 358, and 405 miles. But not everyone shopping for an electric vehicle wants to give their hard-earned cash to Elon Musk’s company. So here’s a shortlist of the longest-range EVs for the Tesla-averse.

The German automaker’s first crack at a fully electric production model is the 2022 BMW iX xDrive, and it doesn’t disappoint. This luxury SUV boasts dual motors producing 516 hp and 564 lb-ft torque with a 105.2 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack. The EV can zoom from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The vehicle’s bold exterior might not be to everyone’s liking. But the interior doesn’t stray from BMW’s luxury roots, with genuine leather, faux leather, and microfiber upholstery options. The sizeable curved touchscreen on the dashboard is also EV-appropriate. Additionally, a panoramic sunroof offers electrochromic shading.

As for range, the 2022 BMW iX xDrive gets an EPA-estimated 324 miles. According to Car and Driver, charging the battery from 10% to 80% takes about 35 minutes with a 200-kW fast-charging connection.

After GMC discontinued its beastly SUV in 2010, the Hummer returned as an electric pickup truck. It features Ultium battery-pack technology, using large pouch-type cells instead of the cylindrical battery cells in Tesla vehicles. According to MotorTrend, the pouch cells should pack energy more densely than their counterparts.

Consequently, the battery capacity for the 2022 GMC Hummer EV stands at 212.7 kWh, powering three electric motors for a 1,000-hp output. The truck can zip from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds flat. In addition, the EV might even be more off-road capable than the previous generation, with its four-wheel steering even allowing the Hummer EV to crab-walk.

The 212.7-kWh battery can power the truck for an EPA-estimated 329 miles. Also, GMC claims that with DC fast-charging, drivers should be able to add about 100 miles of range in 10 minutes.

The 2022 Mercedes-EQ EQS 450+ sedan is another long-range offering from a German automaker. With a 107.8-kWh battery, this EV has only a rear-mounted motor producing 326 hp and 406 lb-ft torque. However, the higher-priced EQS 580, with an all-wheel-drive system, provides a 187-hp power boost. But the EQS 580 gets a lower range.

Starting at $102,310, according to Mercedes-Benz, the EQS 450+ is relatively peppy, offering 5.9-second acceleration to 60 mph.

The interior is what you’d expect (and more) of a Mercedes at this price point. Amenities include luxury head restraints, neck and shoulder heating, massage functions, and ambient lighting, depending upon the trim level. Plus, the breathtaking MBUX Hyperscreen is easy to use.

Though charging from 10% to 100% using a 240V home charger can take over 11 hours, a DC fast charger will reduce the wait time to 35 minutes.

Car and Driver ranks the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Range first among the longest-range EVs. With a 118-kWh battery and dual motors, the Lucid Air impresses on almost all fronts. For instance, it harnesses 1,111 hp and 1,025 lb-ft of torque.

So it boasts lightning-fast acceleration: 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 to 2.7 seconds, according to Lucid Motors.

The cabin oozes luxury, with high-quality materials and copious comfort features. There’s even a glass canopy roof.

In addition, the automaker claims you can add 300 miles of range with only 20 minutes of charging.
