Fashion and films have shared a sweet and deep bond for as long as one can remember. With plots being pushed by a character’s sartorial skills to sometimes it being the only charm about an ailing script, films and sitcoms have provided us with ample fashionistas to take our timely inspiration from. Be it Rachel Green from Friends, Serena van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl or even Kareena Kapoor as Poo in Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham, there’s more than one can ever count. And besides sharing some style tips on the big screen, these celebrities themselves have loaned a lesson or two, IRL. And trust me, I can go on and on about Blake Lively’s Serena van der Woodsen moments on both the red carpet and New York streets. Let’s take a look at these iconic style moments.

Anne Hathaway had the internet’s unbiased attention when she arrived for Michael Kors’ collection showcase at this year’s New York Fashion Week. The Princess Diaries star arrived wearing a faux crocodile-skin leather jacket, teamed with a matching micro skirt and a black turtleneck sweater. Her ensemble instantly reminded the internet of her famous character Andy Sachs, who once pulled off the exact same look in the popular film–The Devil Wears Prada. The icing on the cake were Anne’s hair bangs and makeup, which made us scream–”ditto.”

If I put a coin in a jar, for every time that Blake Lively loaned inspiration from her fabulous and iconic Gossip Girl character, I’d probably be on the list of the world’s wealthiest women. The actress who often works sans a professional stylist, seems to be taking style cues from her fashionable onscreen self, to slay at every major event. From couture to casual, Blake has been living her Serena era for quite some time now.

I still remember being obsessed with Vivian Ward’s closet, when I watched Pretty Woman for the first time. Swiftly shifting from sexy lingerie to soirée gowns, actress Julia Roberts made sure to add her name to the list of well-dressed onscreen characters. And often, we find the actress taking style lessons from her onscreen role to dress up for special events. Well, remember this one time she opted for a Michael Kors polka-dotted jumpsuit to attend a polo event in LA? The old-school, classic print was earlier seen on Roberts’ character–Vivian, who made it pretty popular in a tea-length dress and belt.

The woman who flagged off a gazillion style trends in the ’90s and continued to do so in the early 2000s is still a cult-favourite character. Played by actress Jennifer Aniston, who barely resonates with Rachel Green’s impeccable sartorial sense, she was often seen stealing a tip or two to dress up IRL. A little black dress, that Rachel was often seen wearing in Friends, was also tried and tested by Jennifer Aniston. The actress pulled off a sexy black number in the year 1997 for a magazine cover party.

Sex And The City has delivered many iconic moments when it comes to style. And it all speaks through Sarah Jessica Parker’s closet, which is filled with Carrie’s sartorial sense. From tulle skirts, dresses, to kimonos and gowns, SJP has never shied away from loaning a piece or two from her iconic onscreen character’s wardrobe.

Besides Kareena, almost every star has channelled Poo AKA Pooja from Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham. A closet that was much ahead of its time, Kareena’s onscreen character is still a favourite amongst fashion nerds. From crop tops to the chilly red ensemble, we cannot seem to get over Poo’s glitter-soaked wardrobe. The actress too gave a nod to her popular role by picking a hot, cut-out number in Poo’s classic red.

Elle Woods is valuable and it shows through Reese Witherspoon’s sartorial decisions. The actress who played the iconic, stylish and barbiecore-obsessed Elle, has never failed to channel her IRL. From loving the colour pink a little too much to never leaving home without a giant handbag, Reese is in every sense real-life Elle (only in style).

From school girl skirts, and plaid coats to the ’90s most memorable hair bands, Cher from Clueless was a style icon in every sense. A keeper of cashmere in every shade, this Valley girl played by actress Alicia Silverstone brought with her many style trends of the late ’90s. And following many herself, the actress never shied away from recreating the sartorial excellence of Cher, time and again. I mean, y’all remember the lip sync battle where Alicia recreated the popular Cher look? Now, can someone please gift me that lemon plaid skirt-suit?

Actress Deepika Padukone’s groundbreaking portrayal of Veronica in the film–Cocktail, quickly escalated her position in the film industry. Apart from a fabulous performance, her character emerged as a great source of inspiration for fashion nerds and found a fanbase of its own. Besides all of us, Deepika was also seen styling her Veronica-inspired, messy golden streaks and high-octane clothing for a much longer time. And this year at Cannes we sure witnessed a slice of Veronica.
